in about an hour when it's dumped up to 30 inches of snow may pile up. we have cnn crews and reporters out in force covering every angle of this breaking story. forecasters say boston is likely to to be plastered with 30 as much as 40 inches of snow. let's start there. susan candiotti is watching the situation. looks like it's coming down pretty seriously, susan. >> reporter: oh, it sure is. but you know what, wolf? the worst is yet to come. right now, yes, we are feeling the beginning of the storm. but the worst of it should be hitting overnight when we will have mere whiteout conditions. now, remember, this is an area where they are getting blizzard warnings that will remain in effect until saturday afternoon. right now it feels like pellets, cold pellets hitting your face, similar to a hurricane, although obviously much colder than that. businesses have been closed, schools have been closed all day, transit systems shut down. and these are new englanders, includes bostonians who are used to these blizzard conditions. they remember the great blizzard of 1978, another bad storm in 2005. i

. cnn's susan candiotti made her way to boston, the flurries are flying. susan, i see you, hang on. i want to go first to alison kosik in new york. alison, we remember the disastrous situation you had, two winters ago in new york, the great big city essentially shut down. is that the type of scenario, alison, we're looking at here? is that the fear today, right now, in new york? >> reporter: people are talking about that. that monster storm of 2010, back in december. that was a biggie. that was when 20 inches fell in new york city. the big problem with that one, though, is new york city wasn't prepared for it. even the mayor back then said they didn't react as they should because they didn't get the plows out ahead of time, they didn't warn the public ahead of time. this is a very different story because, yeah, we are expecting to get anywhere from 8 to 14 inches, something to to sneeze at, but new york city is preparing. they have 250 tons of salt ready to go. hundreds of plows ready to go. they have got sanitation workers working around the clock. they are on this. they're on this m

it is because of age and fatigue. we're getting the editor of cnn's belief blog. thank you for talking to us. we know that the pope can resign, canon law in 1917 made it possible. that said, it's incredibly unusual. >> yeah it is incredibly unusual. i was speaking with archbishop a few months ago in springfield and archbishop of miami. he said keep in mind, cardinal ratzinger when he was a cardinal had every intention of retiring. archbishops are forced into retirement at age of 75 if they have not been elevated to cardinal. before he became pope benedict, he every intention of hanging it up are, stepping into the summer of his life and enjoying retirement. he was in many ways a surprise candidate to the pope initially as we talked about. forced retirement, many of them look forward to. i have talked to a lot of cardinals in the retirement age and when you reach that age, keep in mind, many have been studying to be priests since they were teens. they look forward to not being in that position. the other thing i have been talking about, pope john ii died in office. not sure we'll see that from th

the democratic party, cnn, cbs, pbs, a few other outlets. i think it was really shocking that leon panetta testified that there were over 200 credible security threats for 9/11, right. he said it wasn't just benghazi. there were all these other possible threats. cairo embassy was on fire, being overrun. but not -- he said not only was no one scrambled to go to benghazi's rescue, no one was ready to be scrambled. there was no sufficient resources in the area for a thousand miles, panetta says. if you've got these warnings as dempsey said they knew about the cable that was sent to hillary clinton saying benghazi's not defensible. they knew about the 200 threats. why wasn't there a plane ready to be scrambled for an intervention in the first place? it's a very strange oversight that no one teams t seems to be particularly outraged. >> you heard panetta say you can't fly in f-16s and bomb the heck out of a place. you can use it psych ljl psychoy and fly it over the compound. they're very intimidating. >> no question. at the very least they could have been used to disperse the crowds. you hear
